Fremantle Surf Spots
Surf conditions in Fremantle are mainly affected by the outer reef system extending from Rottnest island down to the city's South. This shallow reef system blocks most of the Westerly and South Westerly Indian ocean swells tempering it into much smaller surf. Summer usually means small surf which is good for learners. Its possible to score good waves in Winter, but you will need everything to line up and experience to know which spots are working.
Leighton Beach
Leighton Beach in North Fremantle gets the most swell around here and the beach breaks are popular with beginners. There is an established surf school here to help people onto their first wave. The circular grassy area behind the dunes is well equipped with BBQ and recreational facilities for a nice day at the beach.
Sandtracks / Sandtrax
South from Leighton, Sandtrax located in the Southern corner of Port beach is a left point breaking over sand. It works in bigger swells and is protected from Southerly winds by the rock wall. You can also check further up Port beach for workable beach breaks.
