The area features a variety of sea cliffs, granite headlands and outer reefs and is home to a series of world class surf breaks. Margs is where you will find the Surfers point - site of the Margaret River Pro and The Box - a pipeline like wave. Here you will find pristine nature, local wineries and produce which attracts tourists from all over the world.

Margaret River Surf Spots

There are waves for most of the year, but the breaks really start firing in the Winter months from April to Sep when it receives the full force of the Roaring 40s swells. At Surfers Point in Prevelly is the iconic Mainbreak - a deep water A-frame wave which is surfable over 20ft plus. Only for experienced surfers when its big as the wave breaks on a shallow reef and requires a long and tricky paddle out. Southsides next door is a similar breaking wave. Together they form the site of the annual Margaret River Pro comp. Just North the Rivermouth beach has punchy beach breaks and can be a good place for beginners when small. From the beach you may be able to see the white explosions further out. This is The Box, a suicidal barrelling wave breaking over a very shallow reef with such force that it looks more square than circular. Best left to the pros and experienced locals. Its an awesome sight when the big swells arrive at Surfers Point, find a spot on the hill and watch the action unfold.

South of Prevelly, is Gnarabup beach which is protected by an outer reef and usually an ideal spot for SUPs and swimming. On bigger swells, you will see Boatramps a solid big wave spot with lefthanders breaking along the outer reef.

Things to do in Margaret River

Margaret River is one of Australia's premier tourist destination and along with the amazing waves has everything you need for a great surf trip.

Margarets is one of the best places to spot whales on their annual migration route. During the second half of the year you may be able to catch a glimpse of them from shore if you are lucky. Or you can head up to one of the lighthouses or get up close to them on a whale watching tour.

The area is one of the best for growing grapes in Australia and you can go cellar door to cellar door for wine tasting. Larger wineries like Voyager Estate and Cape Mentelle have restaurants or you can just BYO picnic on the grounds of the Stella Bella wine makers. If gin is more to you liking, the Margaret River Distilling Company has tasting courses for the Giniversity label.

Margarets has a few breweries well worth a visit. The Margaret River Brewhouse serves gastro pub style food, beers and has live music on Fridays and Sundays. The Cheeky Monkey Brewpub is another popular spot where you can sample their beers, have lunch while the kids play on the outdoor climbing frames.

Pick up a pre-surf coffee from the Combi Coffee mobile cafe van which sets up early at the Rivermouth carpark. Bean connoisseurs should stop by at the Yahava KoffeeWorks for a Koffee safari tour of all their flavours.

After your surf session, a short walk from Surfer's Point is Sea Garden Cafe which has early happy hour specials and views of the ocean for sundowner sessions.

For fish and chips check out the the gourmet offerings at local favourite Squid Lips in town. The Hooked Up chippy truck operates from Surfers Point carpark. Grab your order, have a picnic and take in the sweeping views of the ocean.

In Gnarabup, head to the White Elephant cafe situated on the dunes. The outdoor deck is as close to the beach as you can get.
