Surfing Kedungu

Kedungu, in the Tabanan district of Bali is a super chill surf spot known for beginner friendly waves in an idyllic rural location.
Updated: Oct 10 2022

Kedungu is a half hour car ride from Canggu. Out here its still relatively untouched with padi fields and green open spaces. But as anyone who has been to Canggu before it's social media fame knows, change comes quickly in Bali. Its becoming a popular spot for surfers seeking mellower and less crowded waves. Access to Kedungu is along Jalan Pantai Kedungu which leads to a carpark on the beach front. Around the carpark are warungs serving nasi bungkus, soto ayam and refreshments. Kedungu Surf Shack at the far end is where the local beach boys hang out. They can sort you out with rental boards, guides and lessons. Bathrooms and toilets at the Southern end next to the cliffs require a donation. No TP, but running water and pail are available.

Kedungu Surf Spots

The main break at Kedungu to the right of the car park is an a-frame breaking over a submerged reef shelf suited for intermediates learning their turns and cutbacks. The wave is make-able even when overhead. The waves at Kedungu break far out and rolls in over the flat reef making the inside section suitable for beginners. This is where surf instructors usually push beginners into the broken whitewater. On the left of the main break in front of the cliff is a faster left break which gets gnarlier with barrels on lower tides. On mid to high tides, the powerful shorebreak also offers barrels. Locals call this spot ‘the Faceplant’ because of your slim chance of making it.

Walking North at the next rivermouth is PT or Pangkung Tiba a rock bottom left and right break. Past the next rock outcrop is Pantai Batu Tampih or Pigstone beach where there are a series of beachbreaks. Further North is Pantai Yeh Gangga a black sand beach with potential for thumping break breaks.

On a typical day, most of the surfers coming to Kedungu will be beginners who tend to congregate around the main break taking off on the same wave. You may get lucky with a bit of exploration along the beach.

When to Surf Kedungu

All Year. Kedungu is located in NorthWest Bali and is affected by the Dry Season trade winds which blow side shore. Best to surf in early morning or when there is less wind.

Things to do in Kedungu

Kedungu is ideal for those wanting to get away from crowds and get back to untouched natural surroundings. You can explore the cliffs and sea caves and other beaches in the area.

Kedungu Beach Nights is the beachside bar which opens from evening. You can chill on bean bags as you watch the sun go down. Later at night DJs and Balinese rock bands take over as the locals arrive.

Stop by boutique cafe Little Ripper for pre-surf coffees, healthy juices and breakfast before heading to Kedungu.

HALOKEDUNGU is a cool hangout / Chinese restaurant with a uniquely oriental surfer aesthetic making authentic home made Chinese dishes.

Close by, Pantai CInta or the Beach Love is popular spot with tourists for sundown sessions. Bean bags and tables are set up on a grassy cliff top to give you a good view of the sunset over the small picturesque beach.

On the way back to Canggu, locals recommend the road side restaurants in the Tanah Lot area for their Balinese specialties - babi guling (roast pig with rice) and lawar (chopped meat and vegetables)
